History of the RVGS Quilt Program

In 2012, the Jacksonville Museum Quilters lost their home in the historic U.S. Hotel in Jacksonville, forcing the group to find homes for the many quilts in their collection.

Each year through out their history, the Quilters had made a quilt reflecting some aspect of the history of Southern Oregon.  Finding homes was not simple.

Nell Mathern approached RVGS about displaying some of the quilts, and in 2013, RVGS accepted the donation of 13 quilts. You will recognize some of these masterpieces if you ever attended the Quilters’ annual quilt show in Jacksonville.

To best preserve and display the quilts, RVGS formed the Quilt Committee.  It began by offering our “Quilts and Genealogy Talks,” monthly one hour talks about a quilt (not always one from our collection), discussing historic events or persons depicted on the quilt or focusing on the pattern and family history of a quilt.

Next, the Quilt Committee began to offer quilt documentation to the residents of southern Oregon.  Even though the Quilt Committee is made up of quilt enthusiasts and quiltmakers, we had to learn about quilt documentation!
